After 13 years and $2.6 million in grants to 960 local initiatives, Geelong Connected Communities will conclude its programs at the end of 2026.

The organisation has made a positive impact on the region with its 24/7 grants program, particularly in supporting small volunteer-run organisations. The vast majority of grants have been under $5,000, and delivered to 300 community groups and clubs where that kind of money can make a big difference.

Geelong Connected Communities has made these grants thanks to the incredible support of more than 50 local businesses and organisations. Each partner and sponsor contributed financial resources annually, most since GCC’s inception, for distribution throughout the Geelong community.

Grants have extended across the length and breadth of the Geelong community, from practical support for our most disadvantaged people through to investing in iconic events that our community has enjoyed together.

A 2024 Social Impact report identified the key elements Geelong Connected Communities were delivering on: belonging, pride and resilience.

Originally established by then Regional Manager Pat Murnane as a volunteer-driven, grant-giving entity aligned with the Bendigo Bank community building model, the organisation evolved, sourcing new funding partners – including Major Sponsor Beyond Bank – and focusing on small grants to small groups. Under Pat’s ongoing drive and guidance, supported by the volunteer Board, Geelong Connected Communities has served a funding program that delivers more than 87% of its revenue directly to grant recipients.

The fundraising landscape has changed significantly in recent years, and the human resourcing structure and administration of Geelong Connected Communities is proving difficult to sustain.

The organisation will finalise the current year of funding programs, distributing the remainder of partner funds for 2026 to worthy community groups.

Partners, board members and friends of Geelong Connected Communities will come together later in the year to celebrate of thirteen years of positive impact for Geelong prior to the December finalisation and winding down of the organisation.

The Geelong Connected Communities ethos has always been to have an impact, and it intends to go out with a bang. Local not-for-profit groups should stay tuned.
